Bio

Christine Caldwell Ames received her B.A. from Brown University, her M.A. from Yale Divinity School, and her Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. She is a historian of medieval Europe with a particular interest in the history of Christianity, heresy and inquisition, and meanings of “religion” in the Middle Ages and today.

Her articles have appeared in The American Historical Review, Church History, Heresis and History Compass. She has written two books on religious repression in medieval Europe: Righteous Persecution: Inquisition, Dominicans, and Christianity in the Middle Ages (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009) and Medieval Heresies: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam (Cambridge University Press, 2015).

Activities

Professor Caldwell Ames teaches various undergraduate courses on the history of medieval Europe and Britain. She also regularly teaches the core course HIST 101.
