Bio: 

Maverick Huneycutt is a PhD candidate in History at the University of South Carolina, where he specializes in slavery and race studies, Southern United States history, and the history of genocide. A first-generation college student, he earned his BA in History magna cum laude in 2022, followed by his MA in History at UNC Charlotte in 2024 under the direction of Dr. John David Smith. His dissertation, co-advised by Dr. Mark M. Smith and Dr. Saskia Coenen Snyder, develops a comparative analysis of enslaved drivers in the American South and Jewish policemen in Polish ghettos to examine the internal hierarchies of oppressive regimes. The project has received research support from the Institute for Southern Studies, the Jewish Studies Program at the University of South Carolina, the American Academy for Jewish Research, and the Holocaust Education Foundation at Northwestern University. Maverick’s article “The Sound Engineers” was recently published in Slavery & Abolition. His undergraduate research on urban renewal and the destruction of Charlotte’s Brooklyn neighborhood was published in Africana Annual in 2024, and his review of Brian Harnetty’s Noisy Memory was published in The Public Historian. He has presented his research at numerous conferences, including annual meetings of the Southern Historical Association, the African American Intellectual History Society, and the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic.
