The South Carolina State Normal School, 1874-1877

The South Carolina State Normal School was created by the General Assembly on February 26, 1873 to prepare future teachers for the state’s schools. It opened on September 1, 1874 in Rutledge Chapel on the University of South Carolina campus.

Visit the exhibit in the Museum of Education (first floor of Wardlaw College) or online.

Richard T. Greener Lecture Series

Richard T. Greener (1844 - 1922) was the first African American man to serve on the faculty at the University of South Carolina. The Greener Lecture series continues his legacy of teaching at USC by focusing on a topic relating to his life as an educator, philosopher, librarian, lawyer, and diplomat.

Faculty Guest Curator Program

The Guest Curator Program seeks to provide an opportunity for faculty members to experiment outside of traditional boundaries to share and disseminate their scholarship.  The program contributes to the College of Education’s stated desire to become a leader in educational innovation and transformation.
