McLeod Health–USC PGY1 Residency (Ambulatory Care Focus)
The McLeod Regional Medical Center - University of South Carolina PGY1 program is
a focused year-long experience designed to equip pharmacy residents with the knowledge,
skills and confidence to manage an ambulatory care practice.
The McLeod Regional Medical Center – University of South Carolina PGY1 program is an ambulatory care focused year-long
experience designed to equip residents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to
autonomously manage an ambulatory care practice. The outpatient-focused resident will
join three additional inpatient-focused PGY1 residents and a critical care PGY2 resident at McLeod Regional Medical Center.
McLeod Regional services patients across Florence county and surrounding areas, from the PeeDee region extending to the coast. Pharmacy residents will enjoy the
benefits of affiliation with the USC College of Pharmacy, including an advanced Clinical
Teaching Certificate program, residency research series, and faculty mentorship. The
ambulatory care model will allow residents to collaborate and train alongside family
medicine medical residents, offering cross-training and collaboration. Unique clinical
experiences including specialty pharmacy, medication access, oncology and nephrology
are available. Many fourth-year pharmacy students train at McLeod Regional to complete
their advanced pharmacy practice experiences. Explore our program details below.

Staffing Requirements
Outpatient Family Medicine Clinic Staffing: 1st and 3rd Thursday 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Outpatient Retail Pharmacy Staffing: 1st and 3rd Thursday 3:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Every 3rd weekend Saturday/Sunday
Residency Research Seminar Series
Goal:Expose residents and preceptors to tools, published literature, and anecdotes, through
a series of seminars, to help in successful completion of a pharmacy residency project
in a 1-year time period.
Objectives:
List the characteristics of an ideal residency project
Acknowledge the importance of a residency project for the resident, preceptor, institution,
and potential contribution to the literature
Acknowledge the role of the institutional review board (IRB)
Review standard concepts in study design and basic methodology
Review basic statistical and analytical tools including power, effect size, sample
size calculation, p-values, types of data, t-tests, chi-square, and others
Apply concepts reviewed above to developing a residency research project protocol
Submit protocol for IRB approval through eIRB system
Create and utilize a data collection form with a database capable of organizing and
simplifying data compilation
Create a clinical abstract suitable for acceptance at a regional or national pharmacy
or medical conference
Create a manuscript suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed medical or pharmacy
journal

Matt Kramlich is the 2026-27 PGY1 Pharmacy Resident at McLeod Regional Medical Center
– University of South Carolina. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2026 and
a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Studies in 2024 from the University of Kansas.
