Position Overview

The University of South Carolina invites applications and nominations for the position of Faculty Executive Director of the Center for Integrative and Experiential Learning (CIEL). Time commitment/effort is 12 months/100%. This position is open to tenured faculty members at the level of associate professor or above with a start date of May 16, 2025 and will be for an initial term of three years. The position reports to the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Responsibilities

The CIEL Faculty Executive Director oversees the CIEL Office in all its efforts to promote integrative and experiential learning across both Columbia and Palmetto campuses. These efforts include:

  • ensuring the quality enhancement plan, Experience by Design [pdf], is realized,
  • continuing to grow graduation with leadership distinction,
  • and promoting integrative and experiential learning.

The Faculty Executive Director is also expected to participate in national meetings related to experiential and integrative learning in higher education, quality enhancement plans, and related issues.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • A deep understanding of the best practices regarding integrative and experiential learning in higher education and strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in assessment of student learning, program evaluation, and institutional accreditation.

Other skills essential for the position include:

  • supervise the full-time staff in the CIEL office,
  • provide oversight and strategic use of the office budget,
  • work with faculty, staff, and student representatives throughout the USC community at Columbia and the regional campuses,
  • collaborate with various on-campus offices and groups.
