Dr. Fred William Teuber, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, is a native of Flint, Michigan. Both of his grandfathers were brass players who met while playing in a professional band. Fred began piano lessons at age five, trumpet at eleven, and in high school started playing the French horn, which became his principle instrument.

Dr. Teuber graduated from Michigan State with a Bachelor of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music with a Masters in Music, and the University of Iowa with a Ph.D. His academic credentials are in the areas of theory and composition but performing on horn led to his career in music. He spent a summer at Tanglewood, Massachusetts; two years with the Hdq 4th Army Band, San Antonio; and performed studio work in the Los Angeles area, the Colonial Theater in Boston Massachusetts, The Hartford and El Paso Symphonies, and the Columbia Philharmonic.

Dr. Teuber came to the University of South Carolina Department of Music in 1967 and was one of only ten full-time faculty members. His duties were to teach all brass instruments with the intent to move into theory and composition while teaching horn. One year later, with Peter Gerschefski, Dr. Teuber designed the initial curriculum for the theory and composition major at USC and accepted the first composition student. Over the years, Dr. Teuber's focus moved more and more to the theory and composition area. 

In addition to academic work, Dr. Teuber coached brass chamber groups and directed the music for USC Theater Department musicals. In addition to performing with the Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra, he performed with the Charlotte, Greenville, Augusta, and Charleston Orchestra. His publications, primarily chamber works, include eight titles, including Studies for the Horn by Shawnee Press and The Hornists Nests by E.C. Schirmer and Medici Music.

Dr. Teuber retired in 2000.
