G.B. Lane, Professor Emeritus, is a native of Moran and Albany, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Texas in Trombone Performance and his Master in Science degree from Emporia State University in Kansas. Lane finished a DMA in Trombone Performance at the University of Texas in 1972, a Master of Library Science from Louisiana State University in 1979, and a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from USC in 1994.

Lane's degree documents include The Trombone in the Middle Ages and Renaissance for the DMA, A Proposed Schedule for Classifying Materials in Music Education for the library degree, and A New Paradigm for Apocalyptic Thought for the MA in Religious Studies. Scarecrow Press published his book, The Trombone: An Annotated Bibliography. Other publications include an article in the Bulletin of the Kodály Music Education Institute of Australia, and another in the Historic Brass Society Journal. In addition, he has written program notes for the South Carolina Philharmonic and other musical organizations. Dr. Lane delivered papers at the Philosophy of Music Education International Symposium at UCLA in 1997, and a paper and recital at the Southern Chapter of the College Music Society, University of Miami, 1997.

G.B. Lane's first college teaching position was at Abilene Christian University, which was interrupted by three years of service in the U.S. Army, where he played in the 8th Army Division Band in Germany and the Continental Army Command Band at Fort Monroe, Virginia. After completing his term in the service, he accepted a trombone teaching position at the University of Texas. In 1972, he moved to Columbia to become the first full-time trombone teacher at the University of South Carolina. His other duties in those first years were sight singing and ear training, applied tuba and euphonium, and men's chorus.

Dr. Lane spent time as music director of the Columbia chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America from 1976 to 1978; as presiding officer of The Hansom Wheels, and the local Sherlock Holmes Society since 1977; and as a church choir director in the Columbia area at Covenant Presbyterian Church, First Christian, St. Peter's Lutheran, and Lake Murray Presbyterian. He has performed many times as a trombone soloist and recitalist, being chosen in international auditions in 1990 by Concerts Atlantiques for a recital in Geneva, Switzerland. He also served as subject editor of Nupedia.com, an international open source online encyclopedia. University committees, on which he served, were the University Faculty Steering Committee and the USC Curricula and Courses Committee. Other committee work included seven terms chairing the School of Music Library Committee, contributing actively in the design and construction of the new Music Library. He was Charter member of both the International Trombone Association and the Historic Brass Society. He was founder of the ITA Newsletter, and was its first secretary.

Dr. Lane retired from The University of South Carolina in 2002.
